The healthcare sector is increasingly moving towards digital working practices, with electronic patient records, e‑prescriptions and other digital applications becoming the norm. With the European Health Data Space (EHDS), this digital transformation is further accelerated, with a strong focus on enabling secure and efficient data sharing across systems and European borders for healthcare, research, innovation and policymaking.
However, not all systems and datasets are of the same quality, and not all data is readily usable or suitable for reuse. This can limit the potential of the EHDS to support high-quality care, research and innovation.

That is where the Quantum label plays an important role. The Quantum label is a quality and utility label for health datasets. It provides a transparent and harmonised way to assess and communicate data quality and utility, helping data users better understand the strengths, limitations and potential uses of a dataset, in line with the objectives of the EHDS.
By supporting the assessment and communication of data quality, utility and maturity, the Quantum label helps make health data more findable, accessible and reusable across different systems and stakeholders. This is essential for both primary use (patient care) and secondary use (reuse for research, policy and innovation) as defined in the EHDS Regulation.
In this way, the Quantum label facilitates data sharing by ensuring that health data is not only available, but also understandable, reliable and ready for reuse across different contexts. By promoting transparency and trust in health data, Quantum helps to prepare health data for sharing and reuse within the EHDS ecosystem: well-organised, interoperable and usable for anyone who needs to work with it — today and in the future.
